Conclusion: Compared with the single threshold value segmentation,Multi-thre-shold value segmentation has many advantages.
Decomposition of Magnetic Resonance Images by Estimating MR Physical Parameters
WANG Wei-dong, BAO Shang-lian
2006, 15(4): 73-78.
Abstract:
Tissue segmentation of single and multi-spectral magnetic resonance (MR) images has been widely studied for the applications on normal aging brain, as well as on the diagnosis studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD), brain trauma and tumor in the recent years. But, the most of proposed methods in the published papers, the tissue segmentation was considered as problems of statistical decision, pattern classification, cluttering, image processing and analysis. The parameters used for tissue segmentation in those methods were the gray scalar/vector in single/multi-spectral images, which indirectly reflected the physical characteristics of the tissue. And those methods addressed the problems of tissue segmentation as the partitioning concourse of the components in a pixel in finite sets. So the results of the tissue segmentation obtained by conventional methods were unreasonable in some sense. This paper presents a new method of tissue segmentation based on the principle of spectroscopic decomposition of MR images, which consider the tissue segmentation as the problem of the estimation of MR physical parameters of the issues. This method can be used for suppressing not only fat MR signal in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but also water signal in magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Thus, this method is called the spatial and spectral MR imaging.

2006, 15(4): 22-25.
Abstract:
Objective This study was designed to explore the value of multi-slice spiral CT in the diagnosis of vertebrobasilar dolichectasia(VBD). Methods The diameter, the bifurcated height and transverse position of basilar artery(BA) on multi-slice spiral brain CT images of 2658 patients were measured to find out vertebrobasilar dolichectasia cases by according to the definition of WR Smoker,et al. Results The basilar artery could be demonstrated clearly in 2379 out of 2658 on multi-slice spiral CT images which were obtained by reconstruction at 3mm slice thick using images of 8mm slice thick.16 vertebrobasilar dolichectasia cases accorded with diagnostic criteria outlined by WR Smoker et al were found, and the CT finding and clinical representations were similar to those reported in the literatures. Conclusion 89.50 % basilar artery could be displayed on multi-slice spiral brain CT images according to the methods mentioned, then vertebrobasilar dolichectasia could be diagnosed.

2006, 15(4): 48-53.
Abstract:
Objective: To compare the age distribution and characteristic MR imaging findings of ependymomas for each typical location. Materials and Methods: 58 cases of ependymomas with histologically confirmed were retrospectively reviewed in terms of age distribution, location, size, pattern of growth, signal intensity, the presence or absence of cyst and hemorrhage as well as enhancement pattern on MR imaging. Results: Among the 58 patients, supratentorial ependymomas were 27(46.6%) cases, and the age distribution of most cases was between the third and fifth decade,20 cases of supratentorial ependymomas lie in lateral cerebral ventricle.Infrartentorial tumors were 20(34.5%)cases,and the age distribution of cases was before the second decade, almost of infrartentorial tumors lie in the fourth ventricle.Spinal cord ependymomas were 11(18.9%).The signal intensity of the ependymomas was non-specific,regardless of their location.A cystic component was seen in 70.4% of supratentorial,55% of infratentorial, and 18.2% of spinal cord ependymomas. The spinal cord ependymomas which were associated with reactive cysts were 45.5%.Intratumoral hemorrhage occurred in 29.6% of supratentorial,20% of infratentorial, and 9% of spinal cord tumors.Eighty percent of lateral cerebral ventricle ependymomas extended to opposite side ventricle,In fourth ventricle,16 cases of tumors extended caudally via Magendie foramen, and 12 cases into the cerebellopontine angel through the foramen of Luschka. All spinal cord ependymomas showed epicentral growth, and intervertebral foramina enlarged was displayed in one case of filar ependymomas. Conclusion: Ependymomas for each typical location have differential in age distribution, cystic component and enhancement pattern.Desmo-plastic development(plasticity growth) is significant feature of cerebro-ventricular ependymomas.Awareness of these difference is in favor of correct preoperative diagnosis.

2006, 15(4): 61-67.
Abstract:
Computed tomography angiography has become an important technology of diagnosing vessel diseases due to its non-invasiveness and acquisition speed.Getting images of optimal quality requires the main scanning is started once the bolus concentration is high enough. At the present time, the most commonly used method of detecting bolus is based on image reconstruction. In this paper, based on fan-beam projections,we have proposed a different method by which we can directly get and reflect the bolus dynamics.Comparing with the image-based method, the method based on fan beam projections have better real-time and lower detecting cost due to its needlessness of image reconstruction.
